The moon orbits the Earth once every 27.3 days. It does not emit its own light but reflects the light of the sun. Because it orbits around the Earth, the relative positions of the sun, the Earth, and the moon change. As a result, the illuminated part of the moon viewed from the Earth changes every night. Each of the moon’s appearances is called a lunar phase.

New moon: When the moon is invisible because it is between the sun and the Earth.

Waxing crescent: When only a sliver of the moon is visible after the new moon phase.

First quarter (Half moon): When exactly half of the moon is visible before the full moon phase.

Waxing gibbous: When the moon is more than 50% lit before the full moon phase.

Full moon: When the moon looks like a complete circle.

Waning gibbous: When the moon is more than 50% lit after the full moon phase.

Last quarter (Half moon): When exactly half of the moon is visible after the full moon phase.

Waning crescent: When only a sliver of the moon is visible before the new moon phase.

月つきは、27.3にじゅうなな てん さん日にちごとに地球ちきゅうの周まわりを公転こうてんします。自分じぶんで光ひかりを出だしているのではなく、太陽たいようの光を反射はんしゃしています。地球の周りを公転しているために、太陽と地球と月の位置関係いちかんけいが変かわります。その結果けっか、地球から見みたとき、月の光ひかっている部分ぶぶんが毎晩まいばん、変化へんかします。それぞれの月の見みえ方かたを月の満みち欠かけと言いいます。

新月しんげつ：月は、太陽と地球の間あいだにあるため、見みえません。

三日月みかづき：新月の後あとで、月の細長ほそながい部分だけが見えます。

上限じょうげんの月つき（半月はんげつ）：満月まんげつになる前まえで、月つきのちょうど半分はんぶんが見えます。

半月よりふくらんだ、満みちていく月： 満月になる前の、月が50%ごじっパーセント以上いじょう照てっている状態じょうたいです。

満月：月は、完全かんぜんな円えんに見えます。

半月よりふくらんだ、欠かけていく月：満月になった後で、月が50%以上照っている状態です。

下弦かげんの月（半月）：満月になった後で、月のちょうど半分が見えます。

反対向はんたいむきの三日月みかげつ：新月になる前に、月の細長い部分だけが見えます。

Earth: Our home planet.

Mars: This planet has many volcanoes and deep canyons.

Jupiter: The largest planet. It is made up of gasses. It has a giant swirling called the Great Red Spot.

Saturn: This planet is known for its beautiful rings which are made of small pieces of ice and rocks.

Uranus: This planet looks blue green because its atmosphere contains methane.

Neptune: The planet farthest from the sun. It looks blue because its atmosphere contains methane.

太陽系たいようけいは、太陽たいようと8やっつの惑星わくせいと、準惑星じゅんわくせい、小惑星しょうわくせい、彗星すいせいなど、他ほかの天体てんたいからなります。

＜８つの惑星＞

水星すいせい：太陽に最もっとも近ちかい惑星。最も小ちいさい惑星です。

金星きんせい：厚あつい雲くもの層そうがあるため、最も熱あつい惑星です。

地球ちきゅう：私わたしたちが住すんでいる惑星です。

火星かせい：火山かざんや深ふかい谷たにがあります。

木星もくせい：最も大おおきい惑星。ガスでできています。大赤だいせきはんと呼よばれる巨大きょだいな渦うずがあります。

土星どせい：氷こおりや岩石がんせきの粒つぶでできた美うつくしい環わで知しられています。

天王星てんのうせい：大気たいきがメタンを含ふくむため、青緑色あおみどりいろに見みえます。

海王星かいおうせい：太陽から最も遠とおい惑星。大気がメタンを含むため、青色あおいろに見えます。
