Division

Division is the opposite of multiplication. It is the process of finding out how many times one number goes into the other number.

12 ÷ 4 = ? (Twelve divided by four equals…)

How many times must we multiply 4 to get 12?

Three times.

12 ÷ 4 = 3 (Twelve divided by four equals three.)

The number being divided is called the dividend. The number that divides the other number is called the divisor. The answer to the division problem is called the quotient.

In this equation, 12 is the dividend. 4 is the divisor. 3 is the quotient.
