Multiplication

You have three baskets. There are four apples in each basket. How many apples are there altogether?

You can add like this.

4 + 4 + 4 = 12　The answer is 12.

When you add the same numbers to each other, you could also multiply.

4 apples × 3 baskets = 12 apples.

More simply,

4 × 3 = 12 (Four times three is twelve./Four multiplied by three equals twelve.)

This is multiplication. In this equation, 12 is a product, and 4 and 3 are factors.

3つのかごがあり、それぞれに4つのりんごが入はいっています。りんごは全部ぜんぶでいくつありますか。

次のように足たすことができます。

これが掛かけ算ざんです。この式しきでは、12が積せきで、4と3は因数いんすうです。
